Cave of the Heart
“In the middle of my Heart,
a star appeared,
and the seven heavens were lost
in its brilliance.
-Rumi
Of all the many forces in our Era of Divisiveness that are actively engaged in creating conflict, chaos and fear, perhaps none are more pernicious than those involved in continuing the Heart vs. Mind split. We are at war with each other, ourselves, and with the Divine simply because we accept the false premise that Mind and Love are somehow different, separate, or even at odds with each other.
When a child enjoys an ice cream cone on a warm day, there certainly may be an awareness that there is a cone part, and an ice cream part, but I sincerely doubt if they would spend any effort wondering which part is more important. They would simply E-N-J-O-Y. There are many ways to eat that delight, and many, many flavors (and toppings) to choose from, but at the end of the day it is just one frozen desert. Life is, essentially, whole. Our Heart totally understands that existential fact. Our Mind may analyze the many flavors of existence, and that also does go into the final appreciation of Life, but without our Feeling nature, we become de-humanized, we become automatons. To be truly self-realized, we need both aspects of ourselves. Back to the ice cream parlor metaphor, we DO need to make choices as to flavors, etc., but then the goal is then to sink into the experience, and that requires our feeling nature.
In the highest Reality there is no separation- no heart vs. mind conflict. I know that realm of Unity, and I seek to live in that Divine Space as often as possible…and to share the techniques of that attainment with others. This is at the core of CenterPoint…in fact it IS the CenterPoint. The Community that is a prime goal of our non-profit begins with the harmonizing of our own inner spaces and parts. Strange as it may sound, we need to re-member that we ARE whole before we can truly act from that space, and by extension find the outer Community we seek. This re-membering requires the activation of our HeartMind.
“Re-membering is a choice”. This affirmation comes from the “Messages From the HeartMind” on our website. Each aphorism is shared as guideposts and supports on our Journey(s) to Wholeness.
Theory and ideas need to be matched with processes, techniques and real-life applications. “Focusing the HeartMind” is an example of a simple, yet powerful tool that is easily practiced to become acquainted experientially with the HeartMind unity. We may know there is this thing called an ice cream cone, we may have (often) experienced) it, but it is essential to eat the treat to actually be in the state of oneness with the cone. CenterPoint’s core is entirely engaged with supporting HeartMind-edness.
Is the Path of the HeartMind for everyone? Yes, and no. In the end all Paths are One. For some it focuses more on observing experience to understand its nature. Vipassana, Mindfulness, Zen, Jnana Yoga and more exemplify this approach. The Path of Compassion (and HeartMind) abides in the Heart (capitalized) to recognize what is already whole. The heart is our central organ. It contains the Life Spark, it helps provide the mechanism of bringing oxygen to where it is needed, and to expel the carbon dioxide which is no longer needed. It is also a seat of deepest consciousness. It has been said that the human brain can be hacked and can be influenced by outside thoughts and beliefs, but the heart has built-in “force fields” that reject negative influencing. I have found that to be 100% true, and I have also found that getting there, and staying there, can be quite challenging. (LOL). Again, this is a central goal for CenterPoint- supporting the Journey to the True Self through our innate (yet often untapped) connection to our inner Heart(Mind). This Journey of Compassion, and its techniques, are the results of decades of experience, and it is my Journey. I invite you to join me/us.
You are never too young to learn, nor too old to try. Just this week, after decades of teaching the principles and techniques of HeartMind, I was (inner) directed to look up “Cave of the Heart” and “HeartMind” in Hinduism. Although my undergraduate degree involved East/West comparisons of Self-Actualization, and I was deeply steeped in Hindu teachings, I never was so directed. Not in the 50 years since my undergraduate degree, or the 10 years after my doctorate in Divinity in 2016, did I ever come across this concept in Hinduism. Life is a class whose main requirement seems to be Humility. It seems that all I have worked for, all I have sought and shared, has been completely embedded in the practices and teachings of Hridaya Yoga. Further, the central meditation and visualization practice of entering into the Cave of the Heart has been practices, as such, in Hindu traditions. (“Hridaya Guha” literally means Cave of the Heart).
The video: “Cave of the Heart” was shared on May 22, 2025. That was the birth of CenterPoint, and it remains its HeartBeat. I asked why it has taken me so long to realize what I have sought so long has been there (i.e. Hindu Teachings) all along. I only saw a Cosmic Smile, with perhaps the sub-titling- “Now you are (Truly) ready”.
I am finding that in Hinduism “Hridaya”, the Spiritual Heart, is our essential and ultimate nature. It is the ineffable dimension of our being. The Spiritual Heart is the Supreme Consciousness, the ultimate subject of knowledge, the pure “I”. It is the witness of both the mind and the universe in its inner and outer dimensions. It is that place where Heart and Mind are one.
Come join us, come eat that ice cream cone.
