Art in the Berkshires Presents an Exhibition Exploring the Expressive Power of Line

Great Barrington, MA — Art in the Berkshires Gallery + Creative Studio is pleased to present The Line of It, a contemporary exhibition featuring paintings by Pat Badt and Julie Shapiro, alongside an introduction to the sculptural work of Neel Webber.

The exhibition will be on view July 31 through September 7, 2026, with an Opening Reception on Saturday, August 1, from 4:00–6:00 PM, and an Artists’ Talk on Saturday, August 8, at 11:00 AM.

Few visual elements possess the expressive versatility of line. At once descriptive and abstract, line can suggest movement, establish rhythm, define form, and organize space. The Line of It brings together three artists whose practices explore these possibilities through distinctly different approaches, revealing the remarkable range of expression that can emerge from one of art’s most fundamental elements.

Painter Pat Badt creates compositions built from disciplined vertical structures that balance repetition, rhythm, and subtle variations in color and surface. Her work invites close observation, where accumulated marks generate both visual tension and quiet meditation.

In contrast, Julie Shapiro approaches abstraction with energetic gestures and layered color, allowing sweeping linear forms to move freely across the canvas. Her paintings and paper works celebrate spontaneity while maintaining an underlying sense of order, creating compositions that feel simultaneously intuitive and deliberate.

Introducing sculpture by Neel Webber, the exhibition expands the conversation beyond the two-dimensional surface. Constructed from reclaimed wood and mixed materials, Webber’s sculptural assemblages investigate line as physical structure. His work transforms architectural fragments into carefully balanced compositions that blur the boundaries between sculpture, drawing, and design.

Although their methods differ, the three artists share an interest in line as more than a formal device. Whether painted, implied, or physically constructed, line becomes a means of organizing space, communicating rhythm, and shaping visual experience.

“The Line of It examines how one of art’s simplest elements can produce extraordinary variety,” said Shany Porras, founder and director of Art in the Berkshires Gallery + Creative Studio. “Each artist demonstrates a unique visual language, yet together their work reveals the expressive possibilities that emerge when line becomes the central subject rather than simply a tool.”

Located in the heart of Great Barrington, Art in the Berkshires Gallery + Creative Studio presents rotating exhibitions of contemporary regional artists while fostering community engagement through artist talks, workshops, and educational programming.

The public is invited to attend both the Opening Reception and the Artists’ Talk to meet the artists and learn more about the ideas behind the exhibition.
