CenterPoint Book Club: Books & Community with Gail Gelburd
The Centerpoint Book Club is thrilled to announce an exciting new theme for our upcoming sessions: Books & Community, featuring the remarkable artist and performer Gail Gelburd. This fresh direction promises to deepen our exploration of how literature connects us while celebrating the creative spirit that defines our community.
As an inspiring extension of Berkshire CenterPoint’s commitment to fostering personal growth and uplifting the human spirit, our book club serves as a vibrant forum where visionary writers and educators share their work with passionate readers. Through curated discussions, author presentations, and interactive events, we create supportive spaces for meaningful dialogue and connection in the community.
Meet Gail Gelburd: From Dance Floors to Art Galleries
Gail Gelburd brings a unique perspective to our community through her multifaceted artistic journey. After finishing high school at the prestigious North Carolina School of the Arts with a diploma in Modern Dance, Gelburd launched a fulfilling career as a dancer with the renowned Parsons Dance Company in New York.
During quiet moments between touring dance performances around the world, Gelburd discovered her passion for the visual arts. She taught herself drawing and painting, developing a distinctive style that would later captivate audiences far beyond the theater. Her first art exhibition debuted in 1996 at Thread Waxing Space in New York City, uniquely paired with a dance concert featuring her own choreography, props, costumes, and sets.
Gelburd’s dance background profoundly influences her artistic expression. Her simple yet expressive lines reflect the direct communication skills honed through years of performance. Both her paintings and theatrical works showcase characters with compelling stories, featuring brilliant colors that stimulate and challenge the imagination through wit and intriguing metaphors.
A Multidisciplinary Artist’s Current Journey
Currently based in Las Vegas, Gelburd continues expanding her artistic reach through various mediums. She has presented two notable solo sculpture exhibitions: TETHERED at the Winchester Cultural Center Gallery (2016) and WARP & WEFT at the Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery (2018).
Her 2020-2021 exhibition COMING ABOUT demonstrated her versatility, featuring fifty-four ink-on-paper drawings alongside three large paintings at multiple public library galleries throughout Las Vegas. Art enthusiasts can also discover her works at Priscilla Fowler’s Fine Art Gallery on Main Street in Downtown Las Vegas.
Gelburd maintains her connection to live performance through her ongoing role as the Nursemaid in Cirque du Soleil’s spectacular production of KA at the MGM Grand Casino, seamlessly blending her visual and performance arts expertise.
Books & Community: A New Chapter Begins
This new theme reflects our book club’s evolution toward celebrating the intersection of literature, art, and human connection. Gail’s diverse background — spanning dance, visual arts, and theater — embodies the interdisciplinary approach we’re embracing. Her work demonstrates how different art forms can inform and enhance each other, much like how literature connects with our lived experiences.
Through the Books & Community theme, members will explore how stories shape our understanding of ourselves and others. Gelburd’s perspective as both creator and performer offers unique insights into the creative process and the ways art builds bridges between individuals and communities.
